On March 27, Starbucks Coffee Japan began offering cold drinks in plastic glasses for in-store use at approximately 1,500 of its 1,792 stores in Japan.
Starbucks has been serving hot drinks in mugs and promoting the use of "My Tumbler" glasses. By adding the option of plastic glasses for cold drinks, Starbucks aims to further reduce the use of disposable materials.
Previously, Frappuccinos were served in plastic cups and lids, while iced coffee and other cold drinks were served in paper cups. After the introduction of the glass service, conventional containers will continue to be served according to customers' requests.
The plastic glasses will come in two sizes, short and tall, grande and venti. The glass service was introduced on a trial basis in April 2022 at 106 stores in the Shibuya area of Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi, Fukuoka, and other regions. In February 2023 at an additional 100 stores in the Marunouchi and Ginza areas of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Shizuoka. The nationwide introduction is expected to reduce waste by approximately 100 tons annually.
A Starbucks representative said, "We hope that people will enjoy the choice rather than forcing them to be environmentally conscious. The glass is more transparent than the plastic cups previously used for Frappuccinos and Caramel Macchiatoes, and the first Starbucks store to introduce the glass commented that it "looks more delicious" and has a "beautiful gradation.
Starbucks' waste reduction efforts include recycling coffee bean dregs (about 15 kilograms per store per day) into compost and animal feed, offering a cup rental service at some stores, and selling "reusable straws" that can be used repeatedly.
